The genesis of the neighborhood of Graça relates to the foundation of Convento dos Agostinhos, which took place in the thirteenth century, under the name of Santo Agostinho. In 1305 this became the Convento da Nossa Senhora da Graça, which later gave the name to the neighborhood itself.

The Graça neighborhood, which in these times had little more than agriculture, remained very little inhabited for centuries. From the 16th century onwards, several palaces began to appear.

But the great turning point in the history of the Graça neighborhood came only after the earthquake of 1755. The reconstruction of the city led to an increasing number of workers seeking Graça to live. Not only the land was cheap, as the neighborhood was close to the downtown city.

Today Graça is this charming neighborhood we know, a mix of old and new, in which the spirit of old Lisbon is felt and the renewal brought about by the appearance of the new inhabitants.
