About Castelo de Vide Villa, Portugal Golden Visa

Get to know the property

This fabulous 5 bedroom AirBnB/Small Hotel has been stunningly renovated to its original splendour. No expense has been spared and the quality of finish, design. The current owners insistence on using local traditional artisans has triumphed in a modern functional and airy property that clearly celebrates the routes of its historic background.

The small town of Castelo de Vide is one of the gems of the Alto Alentejo region. Here a jumble of red roofed, whitewashed houses clings to the side of the lush slopes of the foothills of the Serra de São Mamede. The old quarter has been described as one of the best preserved medieval towns in Portugal and it sometimes feels like life may not have changed much here since those days. What the town might lack in grand monuments it more than makes up for in ambience and charm. Castelo de Vide is a place to spend a day exploring the flower-lined cobbled lanes which wind up to the castle and relaxing in peaceful squares.

This stunning property sits in the main square, in front of the town's somewhat oversized main church, the Baroque Igrejo de Santa Maria da Devesa. Taking nearly 100 years, the church was completed in 1873. The facade of whitewashed stone and granite features twin bell towers along with a wonderfully ornate Baroque doorway. A short walk away is the Castle the town is named after. Inside the castle is the Megalithic Interpretation Centre, with extensive information panels explaining the history and characteristics of the megaliths in this area of Alentejo. In the upper room is located the Museum of Military History and Architecture with a chronological presentation of the kings living in the castle between the 12th and 19th centuries. This museum also displays some muskets, cannonballs and stone tools.
