The Chinese New Year, or the Celebration of Spring, is the most anticipated party for the Chinese community in Portugal. It offers an opportunity to show China’s ways and traditions to the Portuguese and foreign communities living in Portugal as well as promoting bonds and building an intercultural dialogue.
2019 also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Portugal and China. This hallmark, in addition to the celebration of the Chinese New Year, brings Beijing’s National Opera Company, on February 8th, for the presentation of their “Yang Family’s Generals” in São Carlos Theatre. The show will be in the format of “Xiqu” - a Chinese traditional form of Opera.
Street Events
There are several events in Lisbon that will celebrate this date. Arguably, the most memorable ones will be the street celebrations, at 11 AM on February 9th, when it will be possible to watch a parade of dancing dragons, martial artists, theatre and ballet performers, from Almirante Reis Avenue to Alameda D. Afonso Henriques. When the parade ends, feel free to stick around the Fonte Luminosa area and taste some of the Chinese cuisine and street food that will be on display in several stands until 5 PM. Remember to come back the next day at 10 AM, for the last day of the Chinese fair.
The Orient Museum Program
The Orient Museum, in Alcantara (Lisbon), elaborated a special program of events during the whole month of February exclusively to celebrate the Chinese New Year. One of these events is the Exhibition/Workshop “Papagaios Mensageiros” (February 16th), where you can bring your children and learn how to make paper kites – an art that is believed to have been born in China more than two thousand years ago. Another headline of the Orient Museum Chinese New Year special program is “Ki’s Astrology, learn what to expect from 2019”, on February 17th. It is believed that the Ki’s Astrology defines your character traits and maybe a good insight into what you should do in 2019: Invest, travel or relax? Lastly, we recommend participating in the workshop of Chinese lanterns, to celebrate the Lantern Festival during the full moon night that closes the New Year Celebrations.
Dinner Events
If you’re looking for a special dinner to celebrate this event, there are some restaurants that will offer a special dinner event for this occasion. Restaurants like Dinastia Tang (Marvila), The Old House (Parque das Nações), Dim Sum (Oeiras), Boa Bao (Chiado). Please be sure to contact these restaurants for more information, because some require a reservation and have specific days for these event dinners.
