Are you looking for a place to celebrate the Holidays and the New Year in Portugal? We can't do the shopping for you, but we can help you plan the New Year's Eve party in Portugal with these four suggestions...
1. Nazaré
Just 125km North of Lisbon, Nazaré is the fisherman’s village that Garrett McNamara made world famous when he broke a World Guinness Record by riding the biggest wave ever surfed, in Praia do Norte.
Nazaré’s New Year’s Eve party is at the beach, but not the giant waves beach. The village beach, with regular waves.
This is one of the biggest New Year’s parties of the centre region of Portugal, set on the streets of the village and on the sand of the beach, with thousands of people partying and several stages with live music performances and fireworks. It’s not easy to rent an apartment in the village centre but if you’re able to catch one, then you’re always near home when the party ends.
2. Lisboa
Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon, is the people’s favourite spot to make toasts, drink champagne, and welcome the New Year watching the fabulous fireworks show.
What you can expect in Lisbon for the New Year’s night is a lot of animation in the streets, music, a lot of people and awful traffic (it’s better if you ride the subway), but an amazing fireworks show, a party almost at every corner of the city, music concerts with national and international musicians, and totally free activities and shows so that the Portuguese and the city’s visitors can enter the New Year on the right foot.
We’re very serious about the traffic and the crowd gathered at Terreiro do Paço. If you’re planning on arriving by car, leave your home early and park early as well.
3. Portimão
Another city in the Algarve with a rich tradition in New Year’s parties is Portimão. The Algarve’s nice weather, the city’s historical richness, seafood and the constant street animation, make it a very attractive spot to start the New Year.
Praia da Rocha and the Riverside of Portimão are the elected by most to attend the fireworks and party all night long. Just be careful with where you park your car because the Police don’t stop working on New Year’s Eve.
4. Albufeira
Albufeira is one of the most sought out destinations to finish the year, not only by the Portuguese but also by tourists. The party starts around 10 PM on Pescadores Beach.
The beach and main square flood with lights and popular Portuguese music. It can get pretty crowded with enthusiastic people, so our advice of a good plan for the New Year’s night is to rent an apartment or a villa near Rua da Oura, also known as “The Strip”, have dinner at home and walk down to the Pescadores beach (20min. walk). Choose a spot with a good view of the stage and the fireworks over the sea. After welcoming the New Year, you can walk back to Oura and do some bar hopping at The Strip. If you’re a long night person, maybe you’ll end up dancing at the Kiss Club or at Kadoc…
Not far from Albufeira is Vilamoura. The village has been developed around its marina and is now one of the best leisure resorts that the Algarve can offer. Start the New Year with one or several of the activities that you can find in Vilamoura, such as tennis, windsurf, jet-ski, parasailing, horseback riding among others. And if those activities still don’t satisfy you, we can always arrange visits to our amazing investment properties there, such as these beautiful villas and apartments located very close to the International School, equestrian centre and just a couple of minutes drive from the beach.
