Algarve Elected World's Leading Beach Destination in 2024

The Algarve region takes the top spot as the best beach destination at the Oscars of the tourism, leaving behind nominees that are worldly famous shore locations, such as the Philippines and the Maldives. This proves why the South of Portugal keeps on attracting millions of visitors and solidifies its position as a top tourist destination.

The Algarve Wins the Top Spot Again

For the 4th time the Algarve region, located in the South of Portugal, is elected the World's Leading Beach Destination, according to the World Travel Awards 2024, the most important tourism award on the planet. Considered the Oscars of the Tourism, this year’s WTA organization awarded Portugal with other 18 wins with cities like Lisbon, Braga and Porto also achieving the top spot in other categories.

With this victory, Algarve proves itself as one of the most especial regions of Portugal. Thanks to its amazing beaches, this southern gem left behind important competitors such as Cancun and Tulum, in Mexico, the Galapagos Islands, Jamaica, Maldives, Maui, in Hawaii and Miami Beach in Florida (both in the U.S.), the Peloponnese Region, in Greece, and even the Philippines and Thailand, among others.

The region that is home to the famous Golden Triangle regains back the title as best seaside spot from the Philippines, winner of the last 2 editions, and shows why it is one of the main tourist destinations not only in Portugal but in the World. A testament to why the Algarve has become a favourite of millions of visitors that are always on the search for the best places to stay once they land in this award-winning haven.

Along its 300-kilometre coastline, Algarve presents itself with 133 beaches, the perfect place for exploration and discovery. The variation between well-connected landscapes, and the outstanding infrastructure implemented in all 11 cities that compose the Region is one of the main strengths of this year’s winner.

While one beach is overgrown with wide sprawling white sand hit by big waves, others can be found in hidden coves bathed by crystalline-blue waters. It is a unique combination of natural paradisiac beauty. Another equally attractive attribute is the Algarve's mild climate all year round. The Mediterranean microclimate keeps the average temperature variation from 15ºC in winter through to 30ºC in summer.
